Leslie Wayne approaches painterly issues through sculptureal techniques, pushing the limits of her medium by sculpting and manipulating paint.
Not limited to the surface of the wood panels upon which she works, Wayne builds up the medium until it comes out into space, often overlapping and obscuring the sides of the support to create three-dimensional paintings. Whether it be the accumuation of thick rows of paint squeezed directly from a tube, the casual draping of a thin layer, or the peeling back of one to reveal another, it is the gestural quality that distinguishes the paintings and uncovers the intuitive process through which they are made.
